Using the Guide

Using the guide is very simple. Just click the link at the top of the screen, and you will be taken to a page very similar to what you see while playing Utopia. Move your mouse over any light-brown word, and you will be told everything you need to know about it in the frame at the bottom of the window.

You can navigate through the guide in the exact same way that you navigate through Utopia, by clicking on the selections on the left-hand side of the screen, or by clicking on links in the main frame. Links are underlined, normal mouseovers are not.

In the specific guide select your race, personality, gender, whether you are monarch or not, and how you want to access definitions.

Browser Settings

This site may not work with some anti-popup software due to the amount of JavaScript. If you can run utopia, though, you should be able to run this site ok. If your settings do not work with this site, let me know and I will see what I can do. Please include any pertinent information, including your browser, operating system, any anti-adware or antivirus software, modem speed, IE security level, and any other special setting I should know about.

If any link or mouse-over doesn't work, let me know ASAP.

Customized Guide Help

What is the difference between this guide and the regular guide?
The only major difference is that the customized guide will adapt more to your race, personality, and whether or not you are monarch. A few pages will be different, while others will be the same. The customized guide has just as much information as the regular one, but the information pertinent to your province. You can still access all of the definitions through the index menu on the left side inside the guide.

How do I figure out my race?
You probably have a Utopia account if you are here. You selected your race when you created your account. To see what race your province is, log into your Utopia account, and click 'Continue into Utopia'. You should have a table of information about your account. In the upper-lefthand corner it says what race your account is.

How do I figure out my personality?
You selected your personality when you created your account. To see what personality your province is, log into your Utopia account, and click 'Continue into Utopia'. You should have a table of information about your account. In the upper-righthand corner it says what the ruler name of your province is. If the name begins with 'The Crazy', your personality is Freak. If it begins with 'The Great', your personality is General. If your ruler name begins with 'The Wealthy', your personality is 'Merchant'. If your ruler name ends with 'The Sorceror', your personality is 'Mystic'. If your name ends with 'The Rogue', your personality is also 'Rogue'. If your name begins with 'The Wise', your personality is 'Sage'. If your name begins with the 'The Humble', your personality is 'Shepherd'. If your name ends with 'The Warrior', your personality is also 'Warrior'. If your name begins with 'The Heroic', your personality is 'War Hero'.

What does selecting '(Default)' do?
If you want to see how the game looks without a race or personality, so that no bonuses or penalties are applied, select this option. It allows access to all spells, all thief operations, and all buildings. The guide province will display no penalties or bonuses either. For the display, it will say your race is Human and your personality is Shepherd, but you will not receive the bonuses or penalties of the human race or the shepherd personality.

What about monarch? Am I a monarch?
Probably not. Monarchs are elected by their kingdoms in the 'Politics' section. Check the box if you are the monarch of your kingdom.

Gender?
Hopefully you know your gender... If you are a boy, you are male, if you are a girl, you are female.
Gender doesn't affect how Utopia works, nor does it have any effect on my guide, besides whether your ruler name is Sir You or Lady You.

Definitions?
The way that my guide works is that when you select certain items in the game (such as your province name), the bottom frame tells you about that item. This box asks how you want the definitions to show up.
If you select 'MouseOver', the bottom frame will change only when you move your mouse over certain things. This mode is recommended for those who use Windows, Mac X, and Linux.
If you select 'Click', definitions will only show up when you click things you are curious about. This mode is recommened for Macs 8.x and under.
If you select 'Load Individually', definitions will be loaded as you request them, not all at once at the beginning. This is best for people who have fast internet connections on slow computers, or have trouble with any of the other methods.
If you select 'none', definitions will not show up when you click or move your mouse over anything.

About the Guide

This guide was originally created by Trevor. Since his life has become more hectic, he has kindly allowed us, alliancerankings.com, to update and maintain this guide.

I originally began the guide because my computer kept freezing every time it tried to load that darn MIDI. I realized that I could make a much better guide without unnecessary widgets like that dumb music file.

This guide has many useful features, which should help people to understand the game much better:

  • Straightforward design similar to the actual game makes finding out about details easier
  • More numbers and formulas help the user to understand the workings behind the game and create their own effective strategies
  • None of that darn MIDI music and few graphics speed up load time
  • Kingdom activity and unity is stressed as a key part, so newbies are more likely to be a part of the kingdom
  • Definitions ranging from very general and simple to very precise and complex make this guide a useful reference for newbies and experienced players alike.
  • A guide to Utopia slang to help new people decipher the forum discussions more easily
  • A search box to find subjects related to keywords
  • An index for quick searches of a topic
  • Options for customizing the guide so it can mimic the output you would get from the actual game.
  • As few advertisements, banners, and pop-ups as possible. No downloads, spyware, adware, and I won't ask for your email. In return I just ask that you be nice and respectful, and do your part to help this guide grow.

More features to be implemented in the future:

  • Every definition will have links to related definitions, helping users to gain a much better understanding of the workings of the game.
  • Tutorials on attacking, thieving, casting spells, building, training, getting started, etc.
